Mormon Monument--In 1846 Newell Knight, his family, and a company of Mormons left Nauvoo, Illinois to search out a home in the Rocky Mountains. Due to hardships, the group could not go on and they built a fort of log cabins by the Niobrara River. Due to illness, all died. The Mormon Monument was built in 1908. Those buried there are: Newell Knight, Mr. Caval, Lucy Brunson, Ann Boyce, Mrs. Rufus Tach, Mrs. Spicer Crandall, Mrs. Newell Drake, Mrs. Dame Gardurout Noble and Benjamin F. The Nebraska Outlaw Trail scenic byway offers a picturesque journey through breathtaking and diverse Nebraska landscapes. Nebraska's "Everglades" along Nebraska Highway 12 has an unusual biological diversity. From this northern vantage point, great vistas encompass clear blue sky, native stands of oak trees, bottomlands, cottonwood forests, wetlands, bluffs, pine and cedar forests, open prairie, lush cropland, and wildlife.This area has rich Native American Influence. The Rosebud Sioux, Yankton Sioux, Omaha, Santee Sioux, Ponca, and Winnebago Tribes remain in the region. Following the early fur traders, a major westward expansion began with the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition and the railroad. Forestland and hilly riverbanks made an ideal hideout for the Jesse James Gang and other horse thieves and swindlers. Today, the Missouri and Niobrara Rivers accommodate wildlife, ecosystems, and recreationists alike. Communities host annual rodeos and offer horseback rides and a taste of the real cowboy life on guest ranches and area resorts.

The National Scenic Byways Program provides for the designation of roads that have outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities. Nebraska scenic byways pass through some of the most enjoyable and intriguing landscapes in the state.Nebraska has a variety of natural scenery, recreational and archeological areas, historical sites, and cultural opportunities. The Nebraska Byways Program recognizes nine roadways that exhibit Nebraska's unique character and beauty.
